The term »racism« is currently experiencing a renaissance in Germany. In parts of academia, a broad understanding dominates, which also covers culturalised distinctions as well as institutional manifestations that are not based on intentional actions. In this collection, leading scholars present a range of different perspectives and show which of these manifestations of racism are covered by the legal prohibitions of discrimination in the German constitution, EU law, and international law.

Visual media have played a key role in the genesis of antigypsyism since the early modern period. This interdisciplinary anthology examines the central motifs and semantics of "Gypsy" images in various forms of representation such as literature, visual art, photography, postcards, opera, theatre, comics, film and computer games. Particular attention is paid to connecting lines and interrelationships. The contributions uncover the content-related, temporal, geographical and media-specific manifestations of one of the most powerful stereotypes in European cultural history. To this day, antigypsyist imaginations have a negative impact on the positioning of Sinti and Roma in European societies.

Racism as a historically grown power relation varies in its complex configurations, depending on social-political as well as local-historical contexts. This study examines how students deal with racism, with a particular focus on the contexts and institutions of academia. Due to the adaptive potential of current forms of racism, paradox spheres (of negotiation) open up to those affected by it: On the one hand, as academics, they are included, however, in a limited way, while on the other hand they remain excluded due to their ongoing experiences of being othered. The analyses show that the social and institutional handling of racism and experiences of racism are mostly tabooed or de-thematized. These structural circumstances fundamentally affect the students' handling of racism.
